So what exactly is a travel nurse? Technically speaking, travel nurses are the same as a permanent nurses except they are recruited to work in temporary nursing positions in all types of locations across the country.

The whole industry of travel nursing jobs came into being as a response to the nationwide shortage of nurses. In order to persuade nurses to opt for this kind of nursing position, travel nursing agencies usually offer incentives plus higher wages and lodging assistance.

The requirements for travel nursing jobs include licensure in the state you want to work in, and usually at least a year of experience in your nurse specialty. But even if the requirement is one year of experience, the better jobs will go to the nurses with more experience.

What are the usual assignments for travel nursing jobs? Travel nurses are usually offered an employment contract for 1-3 months worth of work in any given location. However, if one was assigned to work out of the country, then a contract might be 1-2 years long.

A lot of the time when the contract is over the hospital the nurse was working in will offer them a full time position. This can be great if you happen to just fall in love with the hospital and city you were assigned to.

Accepting travel nursing jobs can have many benefits. Everyone has heard of the high pay. And for the most part the pay is really good. But if you are in a nicer area or city, the housing costs can decrease what you make somewhat.

Tax Advantage – While you are working away from home, you may be able to earn a tax advantage that will cover meals and lodging. Some agencies or companies do not offer both but instead just one. So it is important to choose the right kind of travel nursing agencies too.

Travel nursing jobs are abundant, which means you as a nurse are in high demand. But with anything else, the top jobs go to the most qualified nurses. But not to worry, even starting out as a travel nurse you will find excitement and great benefits.

If you do choose to take any one of the thousands of travel nursing jobs across the country, you will not regret it. It is demanding work, but anything worthwhile is. Just know that all the effort you put into it will be rewarded handsomely.

Not only do you earn a lot financially, but some of the intangibles are very rewarding as well such as your emotional satisfaction. One last piece of advice though, if you do decide to work travel nursing jobs, be sure to buy your friends and loved ones a souvenir. Did anyone say Hawaii!?
